                    What is "Independents" Month?

Every July, in an ongoing effort to “Keep Louisville Weird,” the Louisville Independent Business Alliance (LIBA) invites the public to celebrate another kind of “independents”--the city’s independent businesses.

The month-long celebration kicks off with a Happy Hour event, and includes special events and discounts throughout the month at local businesses in town.  This special promotion aims to create awareness on the variety of products and/or services our local and independent business members have to offer.

During the month-long promotion, we also gear up for our "Buy Local Challenge," in which we invite local public figures to be "Weird for a Week," by purchasing all of their goods and services locally for up to one month. The public is also welcome to take the challenge, and we encourage you to share your stories with us.

The 2013 Buy Local Challenge participants includes Mayor Greg Fischer, Councilman David Yates, Melissa Chipman, the Assignment Editor for Insider Louisville, and John Timmons, founder of the "keep Louisville weird" campaign, past owner/operator of ear-X-tacy and host of his own program on 91.9 WFPK.

The "Independents Month" celebration is highlighted in the video below.  It features interviews with few of our members, who share their thoughts on why  buying local is important. Mayor Greg Fischer also talks about the Buy Local Challenge, and what it means to be "Weird for a Week."

(Thanks to Tori Thompson and her crew at Videobred for all of their hard work patience on this project!)

Finally, here are just a few of the LIBA business member events that took place in conjunction with Independents Month:

The event that starts it all, the Happy Hour kick-off at the Gardiner Lane shopping Center!

Attendees perused locally made art from Consider Boutique, fair trade gifts from Just Creations and sustainably made products from Amazing Green Planet.

Delicious food and drink were in good supply, like cold draft beer and homemade beer cheese & pretzels from Buckhead Mountain Grill, Nigerian cuisine from Funmi’s Café and vegan offerings from Half-Peach Bakery. The Kentucky City boys kept some folks entertained with live music while other attendees played with puppies from Louisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS) and learned about volunteer opportunities.

Thank you to the event sponsors:

One of our cornerstone events for Independents Month, this was a special day indeed!  We partnered with the UofL Family Business Center to create a great opportunity for networking and learning more about independent family businesses.

Guests enjoyed trivia, a photo booth and kickball. And of course there was a Huber fried chicken lunch, wine tasting and all the fun that is Huber's Orchard & Winery including Grain Train rides, animals and mazes.

Thank you to LIBA Business Members for supporting this event:
